Their systems are basically filled with fortifications and factory complexes.
Uninhabited star systems are basically nothing but a gigantic resource pool for them to feed this tiny monster. The enemy wanted so they grew to give them a fight which they regret.

Although the more I think about it, the more it seems like the gaps between wars may have been too big.
