The edge the American BBs had was that they had a better firing control, AA and they had a better radar. The Yamato had better armour and firepower. But in comparison the Bismarck class had firing control which was on par with 1945 American BBs. And the Bismarck is probably gonna be the tier 7 German BB... Imagine the tier 10 one! :D
