History: He joined the Maquis after the Federation colony he was a part of was given to the Cardassians as part of a border agreement.  After they started enacting Draconian laws on the planet, he joined to try and drive them away.  Eventually he joined up with one of the Maquis ships in the area and worked with them for several years.  When the Maquis started dieing out, he was ordered to go undercover, to wait out this period so that they could return later.
His civilian cover was as an engineer aboard a Ferengi cargo ship.  When they tried to run the Dominion border, to smuggle supplies onto Cardassia at significant profit, they were caught and the survivors were placed in a Dominion penal colony on Cardassia.  He immediately began formulating a plan for escape.  For it to work, however, he would need help.  With this new crew, he could strike back, freeing his people and theirs from Dominion oppression.

Why did you/are you join/joining the Maquis?: The Federation betrayed its people to the Cardassians for an unstable peace that inevitably collapsed.  My homeworld was one of the ones that was given to them as part of a border agreement, and the Cardassian laws crushed my people's freedom.  I must defend them against such a government.
