Oswin jumped as Scout suddenly pointed something out, but there was nothing there... then he realized she was teasing him, and scowled, hunching his shoulders against the rest of her words and not quite succeeding in blocking them all out. He was tempted to knock her to the ground but Papa was very strict about that, no matter what happened you didn't mistreat a woman, or a girl. Part of it was chivalry, but part was superstition too, Papa was convinced it was better cross paths with a black cat than to cross a woman. It sort of made sense, but Oswin wasn't convinced of it just yet. You're just trying to scare me, if demons ate those who hung out with you, you'd have no parents by now. And besides, you keep playing at being a witch and people will start to believe you. Then you'll be burned at the stake after you hear your parents screams as they're killed for birthing a witch, is that what you want? My father won't mind the lack of competition, though he'll feel cheated of the opportunity to run your father out of business properly. Oswin noticed a large puddle ahead, and decided to see how much scout could "see" of the world around her, and kicked a pebble along the ground into the puddle. He stepped to the side of the puddle, but didn't leave any room for her to continue walking beside him and not miss the puddle, unless she switched witch side she was walking on.
