Displaying the latest 5 or so notifications should be sufficient, with the ability to View All or expand the box to show all. 

Beyond that, [@Mahz] might need to make the notifications system more robust and able to toggle specific notification preferences (don't notify me for ratings or quotes, for example). It's been requested before, though, so I'm sure it's on his list of considerations.
