I wasn't saying my character would rent the ship itself. But as with Inara in Firefly, she'd rent a shuttle to live in and use when she received offers or needed to go down to a planet to advertize her service. It'd be a deal with the captain, and if it's denied, I'll work something else. As for the anthros. we're talking about a time of piracy and cutthroat in space, where most planets of the solar system are explored by man (and not just unmanned missions), and quite a few colonized. Right now we are already fiddling with genetic sequencing in plants, and it's gene control that created so many types of dog. Would it be out of the question to have some scientists offer to pay people to be test subjects in gene therapy in such a hard time? But I agree. It is a luxury that I don't need. I just thought it'd be interesting to see people's reactions when they set down on Ganymede, and be approached by some...thing, wanting to pay rent to embark on their ship. It'd be a nice injection of money regularly, and I doubt the men would mind another woman on board. =3
