The type who offers you a mug of beer in one hand, as he pays off the poisoner with the other. History: Johannes Artorias Volt was born to a family of farmers within the heartland of The Forklands. He should have been doomed to a life of monotonous farming, grinding out his daily life in the hopes of one day managing his own farm and living just long enough to put his feet up and admire his life's work before death stole it all away. However Johannes, even at an early age, refused to take what was meant to be his lot in life. The boy grew to be clever, patient, and ruthless as he reached his adolescent years, and spent much of them convincing childhood friends to support his idea for a unified production chain. Andre's family supplied the ingredients, Lilah's family brewed the beer from them, and Johannes traveled down the forked rivers selling the concoction from city to city. It was slow going and there were times, when the harvest ran long, or batches of beer did not pass muster, when Johannes feared it would all be for nothing, but year after year, the profits grew. Johannes couldn't keep the coin in his pockets, ever expanding his business to employ thirteen farms, half a dozen breweries, and his own line of barges and carriages to cart the fruits of others labor across the countryside. Some part of Johannes has always been ashamed of where he came from, as if he feels that the mere mention of rising up from peasanthood would shatter what took him decades to build. And as such, he adopted his own manner and accent, even going so far as to make his own nickname. "Calla me Java," became his common introduction when speaking to most, and his interesting turn of phrase and accent raise more than a few eye brows, but few nobles shy away from the chance to buy high quality liquor at a discount for a few favors. A profitable business venture had grown to a promising trade network, but to Johannes, it still was not enough. His eyes looked higher, and he set his sights on a land-owning title, he wanted nobility, he wanted to become an earl. But as any peasant can tell you, blood makes nobility, and no matter how much coin Johannes offers, no matter who he tries to buy, bribe or blackmail, a proper title is just out of his reach. After more than a decade of trying has yielded little in terms of status, and as old age settles into Java's bones, he begins to contemplate the possibility that he may die as little more than false noble at court. Skills: Excellent head for business, silver tongued, and carries a wisdom that comes with age. Dreams and fears: Java's flame of passion for his goal may be dying down, but he still aspires to buy his way into proper nobility. He harbors a deep, unrequited fear of being exposed as a peasant to the nobles at court. Favored equipment: War is a young man's game, and as such Johannes carries little in the ways of armor, save for a set of padded leather gear for emergencies, though the leather is dry from disuse. His desire to present himself as a foreigner, or at least as someone who it is alright to not know much about, Java has had brief training in use of a curved sword similar to a scimitar, and keeps an ornate sword among his effects. Though it is more for show than anything. Extra: Though Java does not attach himself to many acquaintances as most are simply attracted to his wealth, or have been bought with it, he has a soft spot in his heart for his pet raven Liana. What passes for Java's insignia depicts a falcon perched atop a barrel and a cluster of barley stems in its beak, with sacks of grain at the base of the barrel.
