Think of the native peoples of the Eastern US and Canada. Creek and Cherokee, Iroquois, all that. Buffalo are more akin to the Native Americans of the Great Plains. EDIT: A whole bunch of place names in the Southeastern and Midwestern US come from these peoples. Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee all take their names from specific tribes (along with Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ottowa, Ohio, the Dakotas, and a metric fuckton of city, town, and river names, just to start).
