There are 4 factions to choose from; Light, Dark, Neutral and Chaos.
Each one has strengths and weaknesses.

Higher work morale (Things are made faster) outside of war.
They will beat Dark factions in a war if the numbers are equal, give or take a few thousand.
They recover from battle and wounds quicker.

Good spies: Succubi and Incubi
Good at manipulation.

Extremely intelligent
Quick to train armies
Can be allies with anyone

Least expensive island to feed
Can go to war with their faction, with no reprocussions.
