Actually, he's wearing the medical suit on the outside of his prison jumpsuit, as evidenced by the fact that he activated a forcefield around his head before boarding the vessel.  If the creature inside can cut through nano-tube reinforced polymer, then how did it get trapped in a thin metal locker?  Couldn't it cut its way free?

Also, shouldn't there be at least some pressure, as the umbilical was at full pressure when he cut the door open?
