It's good to give characters depth and complexity, and having Saf trying to work out if he's being sexist or making a personal attack against her plays more into her own insecurities and burgeoning inferiority complex more than making a judgment against Phayne himself. You have to remember Saf's a damaged person who's suffered years of perceived ridicule and oppression at the hands of the military, she's likely to take pretty much anything people say to her out of context.
