Hmmm. Close quarters aircraft...

Solid choices would be the P-51D, P-47, Hawker Hurricane, and the Spitfire. The Japanese Zero was legendary for its agility, but light armor. As well as the Me-109 was the most infamous German fighter. 

(Monoplane-wise, anyway)

You'll be captaining one of the Viltgances, which is one of the Escorts to the Dawn's Guard most likely. (And one of the leading ships in the venture into the fog. Anna will be captaining the second of four)
