I find that quite interesting, and I can also agree with your method I always put a little bit on myself into characters, Nero's intellect his quotes he uses (my latest post a good example) his wisdom are all traits in which I possess in real life. My entire concept for Nero was actually inspired by one of my favorite artists Luciano Pavarotti and Italian Tenor and one of the best of his age before he passed, because of him I enjoy Italy and Italian culture therefore Nero is from Italy originally and his name reflects that. I would guess the major difference between me and Nero is I am only 21 lol.
Woah, glad I'm not the only one who does this haha. I'll admit I made Jack a lot more like myself than I usually do with my characters (my original character for this RP, Desmond, was about 10% me and 90% how I wanted to be most of the time). It seems.. Comfortable when your character has a bit of you in their personality. Not like an autobiography, which at times can seem awkward. But it gives you a lot more insight into the mind of the character. Now conversely, when I had the character Jackson around (primary antagonist in Northwards Part II on the old site) it was almost the exact opposite. The character was nothing like me, therefore I felt I could take my normal reactions in the scenario I put him in, and do the opposite.
