The legends tell of many things, of monsters and heroes, of damsels and princes, of things that go bump in the night and those that oppose them. The scariest though are the ones rooted in truth, all but lost to the people. Such as the stories of the Great Grimm. There are many tales about the Great Grimm. The worst of the worst, the oldest, the foulest, the most bloodthirsty. Stories of the Black Mercy, the Reaper, the Shadow of Fury put fear into the hearts of men but there is something greater than those, something that chills men to the bone. The Grimm are powerful and terrifying of course. Beings that devour the flesh of humans, who are made from the shadows and cover their faces in masks but they are terrifying only because of their power to destroy, the ability to crush and break and rend and main and gouge. Take that away from them and the Grimm are nothing more than black animals. The truly terrifying does not live in the shadows, it is not the thing hiding in your closet or under your bed, it doesn't go bump in the night. No the scariest of all things are those that can harm you whenever they want, wherever you are. The ones that can get to you when you are in broad daylight surrounded by thousands of people. Those that can strike without mercy, remorse or trace. Those are the things that terrify. Such was the Great Grimm Morpheus. Morpheus is one of a very small number of the human form Grimm and what is special about these are that unlike the others who merely have strength and bloodlust the human form Grimm are sentient. Like all Grimm they have no soul, they know not love, nor sorrow, pain, grief or remorse but they do know pleasure, cruelty, violence, thrills, and fear. Ever creature that thinks fears but the monster who knows fear knows how to bring it out in others. The kind of fear that leaves someone frozen in place, so scared to act they forget who they are, they forget their names and their families and the faces of their loved ones, they know only that ever constant, always intensifying fear till there is nothing left of them but their bodies. Morpheus is the embodiment of that impossibly true fear. He is telepathic in nature, enough so that he can change the minds of those that look on him to convince them he is not Grimm. No he is not a shadow that consumes, he is merely that soccer mom next door, the kid down the street, that girl from your high school. No one sees the true Grimm till he wants them too and by that time it is too late for them. Morpheus revels in the anguish of his victims. He does not simply want to bath the world in the blood of humanity but he wants humanity to suffer as it bleeds out. He picks at people's minds. Little things at first, 'what was that sound?' 'is someone following me?' 'who's there?' but then it becomes so much more. He digs deeper. Pulls people's greatest fears from their minds and summons it before them. He crushes them in fear, boiling their minds alive and when the moment comes when they have been ground into the dirt he guides them to him and he makes the pain in their minds pale in comparison to the pain he brings to life on their bodies. The victims of his that have been found alive have been glassy eyed, there vocal cords torn apart from there screams, their flesh unrecognizable. None of them live for long.
