I was born special. God, Lady Luck, good ol’ cosmic chance, whatever it was, it decided I was gonna be grand. Powers? Yeah that’s all well and good, I hid that until I was seventeen, but I’ll tell you where the real attention is, the spotlight. Oh man, that’s my home right there, center-stage, title-role, headliner, whatever, just let me up there. I sing, I dance, I act. I know most modernly-enacted plays by heart, at least all the important parts, even got to get up on the, ahem, Abbey Theatre once, maybe I’ll go back, who knows? I guess for clarity’s sake it’s worth mentioning that I found out my ah, unnatural talent when I was sixteen. If it was around before, who knows, hell, I didn’t even do anything with it for a whole year. I was Fernando in the local theatre’s “Tempest” rendition, I didn’t have time to be a freak. In fact, the second time I used the power is the reason I’m here. Closing night, the curtains draw, I get a call from…I get a call and I need to go home. Actually, I’m not really feelin’ the rest of this story, you guys need the grit? Can I just sum it up for you? Parents saw me use my power, and it was either this or hit the road. Cool? Okay, enough history lessons, let’s cut to brass-tax or whatever it is you yanks say, I entertain. You’re looking at a star here, some real talent, and I’m not afraid to say it. I’ve dealt with the cutthroat business of the theatre, hell, I’m a natural shark. You learn how to work people there, you end up with a silver tongue, and mine’s sterling. Truth is, and take this to heart, no one’s just gonna notice you, you don’t just get attention, aye? Life is one big competition and love, I’m not out for runner-up. I know what I said before but let me tell you, no one is born this good, even me, I clawed my way to where I am, my name is picking up worth, and one day I’m gonna mean something, because otherwise, you die and no one remembers who you were. No one even cares, except for the few people who knew you enough to keep from forgetting you. Sometimes that’s not enough, sure as hell isn’t for me.

There was no better feeling than delivering a soliloquy on stage. The warm spotlight, the raw emotion, the fact that no one dared to take their eyes away from him. What kept the nostalgia away however was perhaps the second best feeling, the after-party. It was easy enough to pick out the actors from the crew and the guests. Most of the stage-folk had come straight from closing, so remnants of costumes made up a good portion of the goers. An hour in and Chess had shaken probably twenty hands, downed at most three free-drinks (he’d be driving home after-all) and gotten a number from both sides of a cute little relationship. The girl wasn’t theatre, he ditched her number as soon as she turned around, the boy he’d seen at a few sets though, cute, big-type, might call him over one night. “Abbey!” He nearly dropped his cup when he heard that voice. Turning he saw his sister Nora meandering through the crowd towards him. She looked so out of place, long dark sweater, baggy pants and comfy shoes. Her wide eyes were curious as anything, her figure hunched away from the noise around her but she kept a smile at him. She held a red cup in her hands, Chess felt his stomach churn. “Nora, how’d you get here?” he snatched the cup from her and took a quick sip, brow furrowing. “Who gave this to you? I swear to god they’ll be cleaning props forever, you’re too young to drink, you know you’re too young to drink.” “So’re you,” she mumbled. Chess’s lips pursed, and he dumped the drink away. Nora had that look on her face that came around whenever he got “too frantic” as she put it. “You’re right,” he said with a sigh. “But really, you shouldn’t be here, I thought you went home with mum and dad?” “I told’em you said I could hang around.” “Oh god, they don’t know you’re at a party, do they? Nora you don’t live in the dorms, if you go home smelling like alcohol they’ll kill you.” She rolled her eyes. “I said we were gonna go get coffee and hang out with your playwright buddies. I just kinda wanted to hang out tonight. Missed you since you moved in here, y’know?” Chess couldn’t help the smile that tugged at his lips. It had been at least a week since their last sit-down together, and he’d been feeling a bit of a void too. The parties were entertaining, the attention more so, but he got both from Nora without having to put on a fake smile for the people he didn’t care about. Around her he actually got to relax, and maybe that was the better feeling. “Yeah, same,” he said, and gave her a hug. “Let’s dodge this place, though, I know a top café in the area. I want to hear about your year so far.”
*coughstormcough*
