Edwin paused when he noticed whatever it was that lay in the water. Something about it felt off. It was larger than any of the other objects he'd seen so far. Too large to even be some poor soul swept up in the currents, and the exact shape was indecipherable. So then what could it be? Some sort of sea creature unfortunate enough to end up in the sewers? Cargo from a ship? I suppose it could even be a monster. Here's as good a place as any for one to show up. If that was the case it would probably be best to find out before they tried doing anything else with it. The plan was to meet back up with the group, but Edwin decided it would be best to make sure it wasn't going to kill them now rather than later. To do so, he retrieved one of the loose bricks. If it was just a large object that somehow made it into the sewers, as unlikely as that may be, it would at worst be a bit damaged. In the event it was a sea creature it didn't look to be a live one, and a monster would probably be angry regardless of what he did. So under the assumption that it would be no worse than the alternatives, Edwin stood back from the water's edge, and lobbed the stone at the shape and into the water.
