I think the colonies will play a part in  the roleplay but not so much the plot. For example, my guy uses a mix of modern weapons and hand-me-downs from Europe since he's the warlord of where Macao and Hong Kong are located, so I guess they will mainly affect what the populace in your area thinks and (maybe) weapons.

That said, I'm coming up with a list of "unique units" for some of the culture/confluences so people who need a little inspiration for their armies can just rip some out.
