Guilty pleasures. Everyone loves indulging them. 

I feel sort of like when people are children/tweens they don't know the concept, because of the mentality of "Oh man this is so cool everyone else must think this is so cool too!!". When people hit highschool they're pressured to only enjoy what their select clique enjoys, shunning past obsessions, until they finally say "fuck that" and just enjoy or create whatever shit makes them happy (be it furries, magical schools, Mary Sues or anything else). People are happy with what they're happy with, some of the "shittiest" RPs are the most successful because of that.
