He had to sacrifice civilian lives in order to save a much larger portion of the city of Wallachia during the ottoman empire attack. Not every life can be saved. He was more comfortable that at least they would go to heaven, based of their religious beliefs.

They didn't die in fear, they died knowing it was coming. They didn't fear it. Nowadays, everyone treats death like a scary thing.
