Diego Cortez
Contrary to popular belief, the FlyingDeath is not the only pirate ship on the ocean that has a vampire crew. There is another ship, less known but far older, that sails the seas, stirring fear in the hearts of any human brave enough to enter it's territory. But not for reasons that you might think. The Numantia is captained by Diego "El Pollo Loco" Cortez, a vampire who is desperately in love with humans. He has titled himself as their "Guardian at Sea" and will stop at nothing to lend his aid to ships who need it, ensuring their safe journey. The only humans that he despises are the ones that intentionally enslave other humans and sell them for profit. The transatlantic-slave trade is his worst nightmare and he has made it his mission in life to stop any slave ship he can. After liberating a ship, the humans who comply to his demands are taken to Numantia's cells and kept as a food source and the ones who do not are drained of their blood and killed. The would-be slaves on the ships remain untouched and taken back to their homeland with the help of one of Diego's crew members. Unlike the FlyingDeath, Numantia is only infamous within the slave-trade and the other pirates in the sea. Before he was a vampire, Diego was just a simple man from Spain. There was nothing special about him that made him stand out to a vampire and the only reason he got bit by one was because he was at the wrong place and the wrong time. The vampire that bit him reluctantly took responsibility and cared for him for a couple of years, showing him how to hunt and adapt into human society without gaining attention. Once Diego was able look after himself, his sire left and Diego was on his own. Decades have passed since then but he has managed to create a life for himself. Diego's love for humans spawned the moment he met his late wife. She was a human who had no desire to become a vampire and Diego respected her wishes and never turned her. But that never stopped him from marrying her and together they lived a very happy life. Through her Diego was able to see humans as more than food and that each person was unique and had their own individual stories. With her he had two children, a daughter who was born a vampire and a son who was born human. His daughter was considered a "half-breed" and only had half the power Diego did, but still required blood to survive. He let his son decide for himself if he wanted to become a vampire as well, and when he was twenty he decided to remain a human. Diego lived with his wife until her death, caused by normal aging and buried her at sea. No longer content with living on land, or in Spain, Diego got himself a ship and crew by selling his house and took to the sea. He gave his crew the decision of being turned into vampires or returning to land, and more than half wanted to be turned. With his crew, he sailed without a purpose until he encountered his first slave ship. Horrified at the horrors they inflected on other human beings, Diego killed every member of that ship and fed them to his crew. He learnt of the slave trade and personally returned the ship back to Africa. After that he had patrolled the seas, stooping every ship he can find to inspect them for human trafficking. Even though he loves humans, he doesn't stop drinking their blood, but mostly takes it from people he has deemed as "evil". He doesn't hate other vampires for drinking human blood or try to stop them, but he will step in if they drink them to the point of death. This has caused some bad blood to form between him and other vampires he has met along the way, but thanks to his power and strength, he wins many of his battles. He is an experienced fighter and has an intelligent mind to back up his strength, making him the perfect Captain for his crew. He is very easy going in peaceful situations, but if angered his fury is second to none. He has been nicknamed "El Pollo Loco" by those who have fought him and escaped due to the crazy laugh he has right before he delivers the finishing blow.
