Vansen was part of a military-family. A riot broke out and a few thugs broke into their home and killed their parents while they hid in the attic when they were younger. Their oldest sister, Shane took responsibility for the three of them and volunteered in the Marines as a pilot, while Ann (middle child) married and had a daughter (Marion V. Bowman, named after their late mother).

Adria joined the navy as a technical-engineer, patching holes in fighters, overlooking starship-drives, or manning weapons-turrets.

When the news of Shane's disappearance during a routine shuttle-run reached her, it also came with the accusation that she had somehow made a bad-repair that had cost the lives of presumably all on-board.

  Disaster - Your rival (Jaege Brixon) sabotages your part of a mission (which you both [along with a number of others] were sent out to complete) in attempt to lower your status and give himself a 1-up, it ends up resulting in the deaths of no less than 5 of your fellow crewmen. He blames you for the event, and the senior officers side with him - securing his position and making an enemy out of you. You are ejected from your navy career.
