Well you do of course have those static characters in any novel... like Pop now that I think of it but they're usually side characters or antagonists. Like Javert from Les Miserables who committed suicide when he compromised his initial morals. I see your point though, those characters in novels that refuse to change even when faced with over whelming evidence that they should generally become those characters that you start swearing at to get a grip half way through the story. They're also never main characters.
