I'm sure they wouldn't be the first to make that journey. In fact, Suzy's character is stated to have done so. I don't think you need to justify it at all. We can assume the trip isn't easy, but it's not impossible. Especially with groups like the Brotherhood and NCR trying to civilize the wasteland. There's a good chance there's some sort of road or system to get people across.
[@Earnest Evans] It's doable, especially with clear most of the southern mid-west of raiders. The brotherhood was up further north. Going through Texas and then up would be a perfectly safe route. Also tornadoes would only be a problem some of the year. If you had a car you make the trip in 3 or four weeks outside tornado season.
Yes, but that's assuming that the Roads are all still intact. You have to remember that with the roads almost all in complete disrepair, that most cars will have their suspension turned to swiss cheese after 50 miles offroad... If that... So, taking into account that you will have to constantly stop for parts and maintainance, and most likely having to get new wheels at some point, the trip will most likely be substantially longer. Plus, he needs to know the roads and which way to go. Here's an idea. Say that they crossed by steed. Bramihn or Horses (If some Dogs survived unmutated, i don't think it's a strech to say that some Horses also)
