Ros's assumption is correct.

Neither Klaus nor Aaron are aware that Mengele, irritated with the slow pace of the Zauber project, arranged to have a group of prisoners exposed to the canister when none of the project team members were at the lab. They're now being studied at Auschwitz in secret, but I'm sure Aaron will go apeshit when he finds out.
