He can speak to Magnus to keep updated. He persistently keeps a line open, even if he doesn't speak or try and dig into your memories you'd notice his presence.
If you want to do things till nightfall you could pull some strings from the shadows in the meantime.
Maybe turn in some favors with other vampire dens to have an undead cavalry when night falls?
