What about if the "gun" acts as a magnifying lens for magical energy? An example would be focusing fire magic into the gun to effectively create a flamethrower, or perhaps even to create "lasers". Just an idea.

Also, would magic be spell based or would it be...idk, free casting? Or both? And by free casting I mean that the character has control over fire and can manipulate it into a flame wall or torch or whatever is wanted.
