While I don't intentionally sabotage my nation, I do everything like they would actually do and don't mind if they get into deep shit because of it.
Generally I think this sorts of mentality is beneficial for NRPs.
Don't be too attached to your nation's well-being and instead revel in the opportunities to present them in as many kinds of situations as you could.
