it's a club because the original people to claim heritage of the hero couldn't settle on who the true descendant was. They fought over it until they all decided it was pointless. So they make it a rule among themselves that if you do have a claim you just gunna have to prove yourself through pledging to be a hero and to keep that up you have to stick around the group so you can't cheat. 

Having any unique item like a mask or sword that transforms you into 4 people would put you on a list of people that are viewed as a descendant of the hero. You wouldn't go ignored by those in the club because they'd try to recruit you (all) even if you just wanted to do good in the world.

If you really didn't want to be part of the club then you'll be pestered to join the adventures anyway.
