One problem that I see: You have a character who can pick up languages by hearing them, but he's illiterate? Sorry, that just strikes me as a bit odd.
Other than that, entirely accepted. And yes, Nova Infinitum would work as a name, both in the consideration of the latin and just "Nova" as in the explosion of a star.
