That would be best, I think. We already have one guy using a purely combat/destructive form of Alteration, which is what you would be doing. 

You could still make that character, but I wouldn't advise it. It's the most popular form of magic so far.

If you want, you can create your own magic, or use one of the less-popular ones, like destruction (good for combat, as you mentioned) or Runic. But I won't tell you what kind of character you can or cannot make, so feel free to go for combat Alteration if that is what you really want.
