You don't necessarily have to kill her. From what I've read of James' background as well as his various interactions, I think it's plausible that he would leave Alex, be it him feeling any moral obligations now gone since they buried all the deceased, her stories reminding him of a past he wants to forget, or even believing that being around her is bad for his health. Then again considering his occupation, maybe it's better to say the pay off isn't worth the risk. I'm probably not accurately portraying how he'd act and I'm certainly not telling you how your character should be, merely pointing out that your character is complex enough where ditching her isn't an asspull and is probably rational.
