The reason people think that is because a great deal of our brain's functions are automatic.  If we used '100% of our brain' consciously, then we would have to consciously breath, pump blood through our veins, figure out the right emotions to use for a given situation, process sensory inputs from all of our senses, and find every memory one moment at a time.  It would not be fun.

I've looked at those sites, and I do not elieve they are peer reviewed. Nor do they appear to have references. 

I do not trust them.
