I imagined that he'd use the power like a half-bubble most of the time, projecting the round edge of the fields facing the direction that threats are coming from. He could probably manipulate one into a bubble around himself, if he wasn't sure where he was being attacked from, but I don't imagine that he'd constantly maintain it. I envision him throwing his arms up to create fields where he needs them and then they dissipate after serving their purpose.
