Rookie went back to his lower bunk and sat down, making the bedsprings creak. Bouncing slightly on the mattress, he shook his head in bewilderment. Maybe he was prototyping his friend's virtual reality headset, but forgot about it. Maybe this was elaborate prank by his housemates as a twisted 3 year anniversary gift. Maybe he had awoken from the matrix—whatever it was, he obviously wasn’t here by consent. His hands brushed over the bump on his neck and he shivered, a dull memory flickering at the outer ridges of his mind. He had fallen asleep in his room, like any other night, and that was all he could remember. “This can’t be real,” Rooke muttered, watching the people around him change as if they had no care in the world, one of the girls even slipping out of her underwear. He lied back in his bed and stared at the sterile ceiling above of him, assessing his situation; he had no recollection of ever meeting the naked people he currently shared a room with, and was at the whim of unidentified persons. So this is why my parents taught me about stranger danger, he thought as he sat up and pulled the bag from under his bed. Placing the duffle on his lap, he shuffled through its contents, resting the uniform on the bed before thumbing the slip of paper on the top. It read “driver” in a fiery orange atop a paragraph that outlined the description. As Rooke read the details, a lopsided smile slowly formed on his face. His heart pounded and his hands began to sweat, and after a minute of deliberation he stood up and started stripping. “I’m glad we’re all getting to know each other better,” he said, his eyes raking over every body in the room. He unabashedly faced the other members as he changed, his bravado fueled by the absurdity of the situation. Taking all the time in the world, he changed into his new uniform and slipped into the pair of shoes beneath his bunk. He glanced at the conversing pair of girls, and said, ”I’m more interested in why you all seem to be taking this so well. Is this not fucking weird?” Rookie motioned to the reflective glass, his old shirt still clenched in his fist, and laughed, ”The U.M.F? Seriously? I mean, I know I said yes, too, but I can't be the only thinking this is unreal.”
