Well, it doesn't have to be a fight, they can just win at something. For example, the pokemon contest example. Or, you could have a scavenger hunt contest or something, where they have to find the most items. 

In fact, truth be told, a battle royale would be pretty fun, but it brings up logistical problems. Say two people who both want victini are in the same group or something, the one who didn't get it would be nursing some pretty damn bitter resentment at the dude who did, and the fact that having means you always win might make the RP a bit too easy.
