You can get prepaid phones pretty cheap. Like, i'm paying $45 a month for a smartphone. If you just need a run-of-the-mill type phone, you can get those quite a bit cheaper. 

You kinda gotta be careful with the big cell companies. It's like cable, they like to find whatever little way to fuck you they can.
