Shani woke with a start; the lack of warmth around her was a sure indication that her mother wasn’t in the nest anymore, and that meant it was time for her to get up too. The young fire-fox bounded out of her home-burrow, which was just inside the village borders, looking about for her mother as she went. “Mama, what’re you doin’?” Her mother was sitting just outside the burrow, soaking up the morning sun. She nudged over a couple of berries for Shani to eat for breakfast, and spoke. “Just waiting for you, darling. Now, I’m going to be helping out with the berry picking today, so I want you to go find someone to play with, okay?” “Okay!” Shani chirped happily as she munched on her breakfast. She gobbled the berries up quickly, before turning on her hind legs, tripping over them slightly as her tail failed to turn with her, and bouncily ran towards the village square. Hopefully someone would be there to play with her! “And stay within the village boundary!” Her mother called after her. Shani flicked an ear back in response, calling a hasty “Okay!” before she was out of sight of the older Fennekin.
