You can't change the past! You'd be fighting against all History Guardians in existence!" The little fairy cried out in desperation where I held her in a tight grip in my right hand, not allowing her to escape. I breathed out, trying to calm myself down, blanking out my mind in order to focus. I looked down on the little bracelet with a cog on it in my left hand, which the fairy had been wearing and used for time-travel, and gave the fairy a questioning look. "It's no use! Even if you do time-travel, Aeternam will sense the time-ripples, and they'll have guardians to intercept you before you even arrive! No use, I tell you!" The green-haired twelve-inch fairy cried out at me, trying to discourage me of the actions that I intended to go through with. Yes, that. That was a deeply troublesome little detail, which forced me to consider. "Even if you DID succeed in changing her past, you'd have to let me go eventually, and I'll tell them everything! If I don't return, they'll time-travel to seek me out, and they know we're here at this exact time! They'll grab you before you do something to me!" That was also troublesome. Indeed, this did seem like an impossible task, as I sat there on a chair over the downed body of a History Guardian with his fairy in my hand. "A-are you really so greedy as to go against these odds just to change your past?" The fairy was crying, staring up at me with tears in her eyes, and what she said caused me to look at her, a little look of surprise as she referred to it as my past. I waited a moment before I sighed, then returned her look with a kind little smile. "That girl is no longer me. Our paths have diverged, she's off to live her own life. That's why I have to stop her from becoming me again." A few minutes prior You got to be kidding me. I sat instinctively politely, my hands together, staring blankly forward at the young man that had visited me. He didn't look very enthusiastic, either, leaned back relaxed in the chair opposite the table. On top of the table, as ridiculous as it sounds, was a twelve-inch tall fairy, dressed in a tiny green dress and vibrantly displayed in bright and comparatively long green hair, her large transparent butterfly wings waving slowly behind her. She looked at me with lively though worried eyes. "So, I'm Calan, a History Guardian. This is Miliana, a Time Fairy of Aeternam. We're here because you've been found to have used unauthorized time-travel." The boy explained, sounding like he did take his job seriously but against his own will, practically bored with it. I stared back at them. My head repeated the line. You got to be kidding me. A paranormal phenomenon allowed me to influence the actions of my past self, splitting her off from this reality. In some god-forsaken future, that was illegal? "Normally, we'd simply have travelled to before you used it and prevented you from doing it." The fairy explained, a young voice of someone still energetic about what she's doing, though also somewhat perplexed, which would soon be told why. "But, time machines does not exist in your age! We're forced to confront you and ask how you got it." Oh, so that's the reason. Well, they were going to be disappointed. All I did was shout at a picture of my past self, and somehow got my message across. "Can't you just go back in time and find out for yourself?" I asked, staring at them with a neutral expression of not believing them. The boy gave a loud sigh. "It would be much easier if you would simply tell us. If you don't, which the only reason why would be to spite us, we'll simply have to travel back in time and find out for ourselves. We have to stop you from changing the past regardless. This conversation will not even take place when we restore the future as intended." He explained. I frowned. Something did not connect. "Why not?" I questioned, giving him a neutral stare. "I changed the past, as you said, yet this future still exist. How?" I continued to glare at him, while the boy closed his eyes like he was in pain. It was apparently really troublesome to think about. The fairy apparently saw this on Calan's face, and turned to speak to me. "You created a paradox." Miliana told. I blinked at her a little, and she continued. "A paradox. You changed your own past into one where the you who changed your past didn't exist. Hence, the universe had no choice but to tear itself into two separate existences. One for you, and one for the you who was changed." I open my mouth a little, staring at the little fairy with ridicule in my eyes. "Then, if you change the past you'll create a paradox where stopping me from using the time-thingie makes it so you'd never arrive to examine it, and then?" I gave Calan a stare, seeing how he's putting his face in his hands because of something that was seriously painful for him. "No, that won't happen." Miliana informed, a happy little smile on her lips. "As long as one is travelling with the cog of a Time Fairy," the green fairy showed her bracelet, which indeed had a little cog on it. "One becomes immune to the changes of time. Even if their entire pasts are wiped out, a History Guardian remains in the world with their Time Fairy." "Are we going to tell her everything?" Calan asked with a tired voice. "She won't even exist after we change the past. She won't remember any of it. Let's find the item already, I'm wasting minutes of my limited life-span over here." The boy stood up, making both me and the fairy look up at him. He gave me a glare of running out of patience. "Now, tell us. Where is the object capable of influencing the past, and where did you get it?" I looked back up at him a bit, thinking that he was rather rude speaking like that to an older lady, but in the end that felt rather meaningless. I pondered it a bit and made my decision. "The living room, to your left. There is a broken frame with a picture. It is currently empty, but if you travel back in time you can confirm that it was indeed used to influence the past. Feel free to have a look." I informed them, my lips twitching a little bit in amusement. Miliana smiled happily, flying up to beside Calan's head, as he turned and wandered into the living room. "This mundane thing?" Calan muttered, as he looked down at the previously framed photograph, meanwhile, I stood up and wandered in after them, looking down at it from between them. Miliana flew down and poked at the photograph among the shards of glass and wood, feeling. "Yes!" The fairy's expression brightened up and she lifted from the piece of furniture, flying up to hover beside Calan's head. "There are lingering traces of time-displacement on the photograph!" I stared at their backs, at the flying fairy, wondering. Hm. Meanwhile, I was casually picking up a- "Really?" Calan said, unconvinced, looking down at it. "That doesn't look like any time-machine I've ever seen. In fact, it doesn't look like anything at all! How did this travel in time? Who made it? What is it doing here?" He frowned and looked down angrily at the photograph, mumbling to himself. Miliana was pondering as well, but then her expression brightened and she looked at him. "Oh! It could be that there was a disturbance in the second axis of time which-" While she was distracted with talking I reached out as quickly as I could and grabbed the twelve-inch fairy around her torso. "KYAH!" A most peculiar feeling overcame me. Everything felt strange, nothing moved. Like the world just went monochrome. Only I and the fairy I grabbed still moved, along with the bottle in my hand which fell down and cracked open against Calan's head. "C-Calan!" Time resumed really quickly, and the boy collapsed over, unconscious. I was left standing, holding the panicked fairy in my right hand, making sure to keep her hands under my fingers even as she kicked at me. "L-let go of me!" No, that I couldn't do. If I did, this wouldn't work. Little Me was so much more important than I was, right now. "If I do, you'll time-travel." I responded, blankly. Let's see, I would never ever have done this before. I've never had anything worth protecting. But, if it is for the future of the Little Me who would not become me, I would need the capability to time-travel. I lifted the finger on Miliana's right arm a little, aiming in my left hand. "Let's see if I can." "S-stop it! No!" The fairy cried out, as I managed to pick and pull off the tiny fairy's cog-bracelet. The one which she had so nicely told me all about. The thing that allowed her to time-travel. It was even too small to fit my little finger. "Th-that has no value to you! You can't use it! Even if you do, we'll sense you anywhere you time-travel!" I blinked a little, and looked down on the fairy. Interested, if dark eyes staring at the crying fairy in my hand. I waited a couple of moments before I responded to her. "Really? That sounds interesting. Please, do tell me more." Miliana gasped out a bit, staring up at me in shock. "Wh-what? You can't seriously mean- No! I won't tell you more! What would you use it for, anyway!?" "Hm." Such a troublesome little fairy. May as well tell her. "I intend to change Little Me's future, like I've already done. Thanks to you, I now have the method for travelling through time. It shouldn't be that hard to trick a few time-travelers and still get what I want, now, would it?" I asked, staring down at the little fairy, challenging her to prove me wrong. She looked stunned for a moment, before she shouted out, once again. "That's impossible! I waited a moment before I sighed, then returned her look with a kind little smile. "That girl is no longer me. Our paths have diverged, she's off to live her own life. That's why I have to stop her from becoming me again." I smirked down at the fairy, who didn't seem to believe my resolution. "Besides, if it is so impossible for me to succeed, you should have no issue telling me why exactly it is impossible, would you?" The fairy blinked in surprise as she realized I was extorting her. She turned her head in stubborn refusal. "No. Never. I wouldn't aid a criminal!" Criminal, huh. I did have good intentions, but suppose that's what I was now. I went and got a knife from the kitchen, and Miliana looked at it with fear. "W-what are you doing?" I breathed out heavily before turning my attention to her. "I intend to cut off a leg of yours, or maybe Calan's throat should you not comply." I flash her a little smile, making her sweat and shiver. "Y-you wouldn't." She's right. At heart, I was still a common human, that same shy girl that had once been sitting in that corner. I could not injure them with that kind of intention. "E-even if you did, someone will eventually time-travel back and prevent you from hurting or killing us." Miliana continued, giving me a counter-argument I could make use of. "But that doesn't mean the prospect of pain is any less uncomfortable for you, now, is it?" I bluffed, holding the knife rather close to her, promising pain. The little fairy paled considerably. "F-fine. Y-you won't have any use of it, anyway." Miliana gave in, with a little guilty expression on her face. I could barely avoid breathing out in relief. I didn't have to stray that far from good human values on this adventure just yet. I leaned in towards the little fairy, smiling a bit towards her, hoping to solve things. "Alright, let's hear it. Everything about time-travelling and Aeternam Time-Fairies." Convinced that I would be unable to do anything even if I knew, Miliana started talking, and I started thinking of my plan. Taking my time over quite a few hours, I wrote several different plans, scrapped most of them, before eventually coming to one which I was happy with. When I had that done, I went back in time and stopped myself from using the picture, and then calmly waited for Miliana's next orders as a Time Fairy and History Guardian. In the year 4055, I touched down. I landed on what appeared to be asphalt. I looked straight in front of me at the building I had landed in front of, trying not to look up at the buildings in mid-air. The building was pure white in color, a square with some form of glass dome on top of it, probably lined with unquestionable amounts of future technology. I sighed. At least it had a clear door to enter through. I held a tight grip around Miliana's mouth and torso, looking ahead. In order to not be suspicious, I was only time-travelling where Calan's job as a History Guardian would take him anyway. This was here, in the far future. Someone had been making an illegal time-machine. I just had to wander in. Almost at once, I had a whole crowd of rifles aimed at me as I entered. That, and people holding small cubes of questionable use. They were all extremely serious, and they looked as if they had known I was coming. There were numerous turrets around the men, also aiming at me. I looked out over them, somewhat intimidated, but Miliana would pause time if we were in danger, so. "Welcome, History Guardian. Oh? You're new." A female voice announced with a little grin. It was a young woman with long red hair, standing in front of a cubical machine that was possible to enter through a door with countless contraptions attached to it, wires hanging around. This was the time-machine, eh? "Aren't you a little old to take up History Guarding?" Oh, eh, time to say something. "I'm not a History Guardian." I lifted up the hand I had captured Miliana in, the little fairy kicking with her legs and shaking with fear in her eyes where I held her. "Just someone trying to change the past that got a little bit more lucky than you ever were." I lifted up my other hand, showing the tiny bracelet with a cog on it that Time-Fairies use to travel time. "Mind if I join you?" A mumbling took place among the crowd, mixed reactions everywhere, but most apparent was the absolutely stunned expression on the girl in front of the machine. After a moment's staring, she burst out laughing, and then looked back at me with a grin. "I'm sure we could come to an agreement!" She announced, happily taking me in without another moment's question. With the help of Nyssa and her troops, I learned a bit more about time-machines. How to use them and where to find them. I learned of the planet's incoming destruction because of the time-line the fairies were leading us on. Frankly, I didn't think too much on that. Preventing that wasn't my goal. All I intended was to make sure Little Me didn't live my life. The destruction of Earth 8000 years from now was too big and too far away for my direction of thinking. However, with that in mind it was relatively easy to come up with a plan with them. At any time we time-travel, Aeternam sensed our exact location, time of departure and time of arrival. After that all they needed to do was send History Guardians there ahead of time to stop us. As such, there really was only one goal. We'd go after Aeternam itself. Aeternam, the palace of Time Queen Aeternabilis, was only accessible with the use of a Time Fairy's cog-bracelet. Aeternam was filled with Time Fairies, capable of pausing time, and as such a strategy was needed. We needed a diversion and a strike-team. I would use the cog to send in a team of attackers. Obviously, the Time-Fairies would pause time and transport them back immediately. However, since all the time-travelling would take place at the same time, we were hoping that they'd miss an additional signal. A single individual would time-travel into their palace itself, using Miliana's descriptions to where to land. She was convinced we'd be found anyway. I learned the methods of using explosives for this sake only. We'd blow up their receptors for time-ripples. The Time-Fairies would be able to pause time and fix it almost instantly, but I could pause time, too. And I could do it first. "Ready?" I asked, looking at the highly armored team, with Nyssa in the lead. "Ready." She replied to me with a grin. "Good luck." She told me, and I simply nodded. Then, with Miliana still held in my hand, watching with quite the interest but also a fair amount of doubt, I paused time. I wandered up to each trooper and turned the cog on them so each was sent to Aeternam, by Miliana's instruction. It took some doing, but it all happened instantly to the troopers. I had walked over to each of them and transported them to the place permanently paused on the edge of existence. And then, sighing, I walked over and placed myself beyond the hill, on the designated coordinates. A final glance was given to Miliana, showing a knife. "Pause time, and I'll cut off one of your legs." She couldn't pause time. Because, Time-Fairies will sense if time is paused in their vicinity, and pause time for themselves to match the paused time. If Miliana were to pause time on her own, which was her only remaining power without the bracelet, It'd alert them to my presence. The little fairy flinched, but nodded a little. She was convinced I would be found anyway. "Here I go." I turned the cog. I, exactly as Miliana had indicated, ended up in a closet. A closet filled with very tiny clothes, yet the space was by some reason human-sized. I did not pause time. While humans would not see someone whose time had been paused, it was oddly enough Time Fairies that could only see people walking normally if they actually saw them. This was the riskiest part of the plan. I knew immediately that it was successful. I breathed out in relief. The Time-Fairies had paused time immediately and sent the troopers back in time. They had missed me, who had appeared somewhere close, but different, hiding. Now, I just needed to not be found. Miliana blinked, shocked, not believing that this had worked. I gave a little smirk as I opened the door. There was a grand hallway. From what Miliana had told me, inside the palace proper only the servants of the Time Queen moved, while most of the Time Fairies were socializing outside when off-duty. Though, I wouldn't blame them if they were on high alert right now. The walls were a shimmering blue, and the pillars a grand white, the hallway seeming to stretch out into infinity with a whole lot of furniture. It did indeed look like something for fairies. But, human-sized furniture when all the fairies are, well, fairy-sized? I chose not to dwell on it. I made my way as silently as I could towards the intended tower. Once or twice I heard the voices of excited fairies and took cover, but the little beings seemed to not even have considered that infiltrators could happen. Well, if they have been immune to such from the dawn of time, then suppose they did not have much reason to worry another day. Though, what even is a day in a palace where time is frozen? And why can they pause time in a place which time is already frozen? Choosing not to dwell on such questions once again, I made my way closer to the tower. The hallways smelled of flowers, and I kind of felt sweaty. It was kind of warm in here. I could be seen at any moment, and that etched itself on my mind. Lucky me that they decided to build this place extreme-giant sized instead of fairy-sized. How did the fairies even build this? Did they? Eh. I made my way up a flight of stairs. Everything was going smoothly. But of course, it couldn't go smoothly the entire way. "And then I, like, flew straight over and totally missed my chance to-!" The voice of a fairy. I couldn't avoid her. Fine. I squeezed Miliana a bit extra in my hand, and time paused. Of course, the two fairies in front of me also paused their times, a purple and a blue one each, both looking forward in surprise as they didn't know why time had been paused. "Wha-" I hit them both with a wide arm-swing on my way up the stairs. They hadn't been ready for it. I somehow hit both of them, Miliana yelping in my hand. They tumbled into the wall, shaken, but I didn't have the time to look how well they made it. I had to blow up the top of this tower, where the time-sensor was located. Other fairies were definitely on their way, and only a single one needed to lay their hand on me to send me to any time they desired. However, it appeared that I was victorious. I took out the bomb I received from Nyssa and turned it on. It was influenced by my stopped time, and joined me in frozen time, ticking down. I kicked open the actually already open door, and threw it into their room of parabola-like instruments, wave-writing technology and who knows how it worked, before I spun around and prepared the cog. The instant I heard the explosion I had to go back. I heard the explosion. Even if Time-Fairies would die in the explosion, they could always time-travel and bring their fallen back from any time that they exist in. I immediately turned back time, to 4055, to the time I met Nyssa. It didn't even take a moment. I appeared just outside the building, breathing out, time still paused. Miliana was wide-eyed and disbelieving in her eyes. That was fine. She hadn't seen anything yet. I stepped in, time was still paused. Time needed to be paused, or the Time Fairies would fix the broken sensor instantly. There were cheering individuals who were standing completely immobile. I walked by them all, making a certain note of Nyssa in the crowd, actually looking somewhat worried instead of cheering like the rest, looking down at the plans. Did she realize something? Probably rightly so, because I was about to steal their time-machine. I looked down at Miliana, who looked positively terrified. Terrified that I'd succeed due to the information she had given me. I gave her a little smile which looked as if I intended to comfort her. "Close your eyes." I told her. She looked startled, but then obeyed. I brought up a band-aid, the kind you'd put over a small wound, and attached it over her eyes and ears, around her head. "A-ah, th-this is horrible!" She complained. Yeah, it is. Just wait until I intend to remove it. I took hold of the time-machine and time traveled with it. Where wasn't important. Some unspecified time deep into the past. I materialized on an empty field of grass. Wind blew through my hair, and forests were visible in the distance. I sighed. Now was time for another dangerous time of the plan. I had to count on that the time-ripple machine wouldn't be done in a second. I took a deep breath, and unpaused time. I paused time. I barely knew a difference, but I knew that for someone for whom time was frozen, that could as well have been infinite time. Thing was, I needed to exist here for at least a second. Because there was something there that Miliana had said earlier. 'As long as one travels with the cog of a Time Fairy, one becomes immune to the changes of time.' No paradoxes happen. If that's the case. I took a step back, and turned time back half a second. Time remained paused. My eyes were closed. When I opened them again, indeed, I saw myself standing inches in front of me. If paradoxes indeed cannot happen now, then I should be able to. I poked myself, bringing me into the paused time. I held over the mouth of my Miliana, both fairies with band-aids over their eyes and ears. I and myself exchanged glances. I looked really old and exhausted. This wasn't the kind of adventure I had been expecting. Though, then we both started smiling. It was imperative that we maintained silence, so that Miliana didn't know what was happening. With but the look, I confirmed that the plan was successful, so far. Then, all that was necessary was that one of us used the more ancient time machine. I walked over, waving to my double, as I went into the time-machine. It was a lot less practical than the cog, but suppose that's what I had to expect of man-made things versus what magical Time-Fairies use. I made sure all the flashing instruments were accurate, as I put in the desired date into the computer, like Nyssa had shown me how to do. I was now to become a normal time-traveler rather than a History Guardian. Let's see, machine, what you can do. It started spinning horizontally, gaining speed. I sat down, and strapped myself in place. The fairy felt the movement from my hand, and complained loudly though I held in front of her mouth with a finger. Oh, dear, is it supposed to spin this much? I felt like I was going to be sick. Human time-machines really are inferior. After what felt like forever, it finally came to a stop. Gah. I took a step out, on shaking legs. I looked around, though with waving vision. Yes, this was the forest of my past. And there was the river. Great. I would have to completely destroy the time-machine later. No History Guardians waiting for me? Perfect. I went over and dipped Miliana's face in the river, the sudden lack of breathing making the little fairy with a band-aid on her face squirm violently. It was just to make sure the band-aid came loose easier. I lifted her up, the fairy coughing considerably, before I light tore off the sticky plaster. "W-what are you doing!?" She demanded, staring at me with panic and desperation, still stuck in my hand. I looked back at her, feeling rather tired. I hadn't slept at all, just to make sure Miliana wouldn't slip away when I didn't hold her. "I succeeded." I explained. "What?" She asked, eyes wide. "Soon, your time-sensor will be fixed. That's fine. Soon my double, with a double you who doesn't know she has a double, will time-travel and become caught. She'll be sent back to her own time, and your double will be reunited with Calan, and the History Guardians will consider the case closed." I continued to explain, looking at her, unflinching. "W-wha." Miliana gasped, staring up at me. "Meanwhile, using a regular time-machine while the time-sensor was still broken, I travelled back to the time of Little Me, creating a paradox and therefore breaking this time-line off from the other one. Your Time-Fairies will be none the wiser. Because, you don't actually have a way to detect parallel universes, do you?" I asked, tilting my head a bit. "Wa-wa-wa! You can't do that!" Miliana stared up, absolutely horrified at what I was speaking about. "With that, my timeline is restored to being exactly how it should be, without me altering the past. I'm captured, you're freed, timeline restored, everyone's happy. Meanwhile, I wander free in an alternate universe to influence my Little Me, and change her future to one better for me. As long as I don't time travel and destroy the time-machines I brought with me, both of them, nobody can track me down." I said, calmly. Miliana stared at me, blank fear in her expression. But then she started smiling, staring up at me in amazement. "A-awesome. You worked out a plan like this just like that? N-not bad, not bad at all! Th-that's like, the only way it could ever work." She praised me, and I waited blankly for what I knew would be coming next. "B-but there's a flaw in your plan. I-I. I exist. At first possible moment, I'll escape. After that, I'll alert others. Then, your plan will have failed." I felt something alike to a cold stone in my chest. She hadn't realized. I shook my head a little, looking down at her. The little fairy looked so innocently happy. I hesitated, feeling small tears break out of my eyes. I stared down at her, opening my mouth slightly, looking at her. "You haven't realized, have you?" I asked her, a tone of sadness in my voice. The fairy blinked in surprise, looking up at me. "Eh?" "Your protection. The reason I couldn't hurt you. It was because they'd realize you were gone and come looking for you. That isn't the case anymore. I created a double of you, which they'll find and rescue, who'll live her life happily ever after. You, on the other hand." I gently took out my knife out of my pocket, staring intently at her. She caught on quickly enough, her happiness completely draining out of her face. "N-no. Stop. Wait." The fairy stammered, while I felt her light struggle with her arms under my hand. She smiled hesitantly up at me, like this couldn't be real. Like I was kidding, and she had found me out. "Y-you can't. I-I'll-" I lifted the knife closer to her face, and she yanked her head back, staring at the knife in fear. "N-NO! HOLD ON! I-I'M SORRY! I-I can keep quiet! I-I, stop!" Time paused. Of course it did, it's her basic defense mechanism. Unfortunately, I was also capable of pausing time along with her, because I had her cog-bracelet. I sighed. "I'm sorry, too." I told her, pressing my knife at her throat. I didn't want to murder. This was sure to affect my sense of guilt forever. I wouldn't be the same after this. There was even a second version of her, that would live happily with Calan. But this one. She was too dangerous. Even if she said she wouldn't tell anyone, I couldn't take the risk. The fairy was now struggling with all she had, but her limbs wasn't strong enough. "N-NO! No! No. Noo. Stop. Please. I don't want to. No." Miliana was crying, her limbs restrained, trying to pull her throat away from my knife, but she couldn't escape it. My knife found purchase, and it tore into her vulnerable throat and spilled red blood. "A-aaa-" Fear and panic overwhelmed her expression before the lights went out, blood spilling through my hand, the innocent fairy's body becoming limp in my hand. She was definitely dead. I breathed heavily, crying myself. I could no longer consider myself a good person. I felt shaken internally, my body tense and quivering. So, I killed her. I quickly dug up a small mound of dirt with my hands to put the little creature in. I heard something crack. Looking down, I was presented with Miliana's cog, broken into a million shards upon the death of its original owner. That was fine, really. I didn't intend to time-travel, anymore. I let the dust of her cog lie with her in the small grave, before I pressed down the earth again, shielding her dead body from light ever again. I stood up, slowly. Was I proud of myself? No, not at all. I had done what I needed to do to achieve my goal. I was currently ten days before Little Me was to be photographed by her father in that photo that I had managed to influence. I just needed to also be there and influence her a little bit more directly. It was more tricky now that I couldn't pause time, but I could get around it. With that, I turned around and left the forest. I would have to live the rest of my life in the past, but I was fine with that. I had a double me that had to live the rest of my life in the present, in another universe. From now on, I just had to dedicate my life to make sure Little Me didn't make my mistakes. I wasn't a History Guardian. I suppose I was the Little Me Guardian. Little Guardian. Hah.
