I'm guessing that this is a fictional pirate universe? How common are woman pirates? (Is it a Calico Jack/ Anne Bonny deal, with the woman disguising herself as a dude?)
Very good questions! You'd be correct in the assumption that this universe is fictional. In this universe, female pirates are common and actually just as (if not more) feared than their male counterparts. When they first head out to sea, most do employ the tactic of appearing more masculine to blend in. However once they establish themselves as an equal, they feel free to dress however they bloody well want to. Many do appear more masculine all throughout their life as a pirate. But their attire and mannerisms are not employed to fit in a 'mans world' or to keep their identity hidden. They just rock the look for the fuck of it. They're still faced with sexism and misogyny so they (the Women) have to work every bit as hard to ensure they're treated with respect both on and off land.
