In the 16th century many new gods and demons began to arrive in New Orleans. Some came willingly and others were forced here, chained and resentful; almost all were ravenous. They united and bred, fought and destroyed, alongside those fixed to the visible world. It would be impossible to point at the beginnings of the Ash Zombi; they stirred in the beating drums of Haiti, between the psalms and lips of the Europeans, down to the carnivorous feasts of the Atakapa. It came to pass that the wickedness reigned through their streets, spewing souls and morality into the quickly flowing river where it became lost. Where there is despair, hope shall be our strongest weapon. By participating in the danse avec la morte, which was titled beautifully in an ironic wistfulness, they traded a piece of their soul with the Ghede, willingly accepting them as their Bokor. Not everyone survived the danse, and often it was hard to reconcile the new shell with the person who had begun the ritual. Within hours the ghede zombi’s would meditate on their new shell while palms were burned around at them, and at the end the ash cross was placed on their forehead symbolizing a purification and sorrow for their committed sins, but mostly as a preemptive measure for the sins they would soon hold.
