I don't know if you where referring to my character (which still requires editing) but I actually based the character off of myself. Where I do have EMT basic certification. Or, did several years ago.

And I think ability and fields of study/interest grant great insight to who the character is. For example: someone who studies EMT medicine is probably someone who desires to help people and has a cool head in the face of stress. 

Or: someone who still has the desire to help, but is seeking the rush and thrill of holding a persons life in their hands and keeping them just on this side of death. 

But that is my opinion.
