Just try to mix up the sentence to omit the use of gender defining pronouns. Like the dinner part you mentioned earlier,

"XXX ate dinner, and XXX did so with such enthusiasm." (omitting gender defining words temporarily, let me try this)

I'l just use xxx for want of a replacement name.

"xxx brought the spoon up and consumed the contents, chewing quickly before swallowing it in time to gulp down another spoon. xxx continued at a rapid pace, practically inhaling the meal with gusto."

Anyway, just figure it out somehow. Maybe write it up first and figure it out afterwards.
