I already expect to take a hit on growth and crops. (I don't have many peasants/farmers to begin with. 2/3s are military)

Gotcha on the Purple. Was on my phone so couldn't really compare. 
I'll approve on your shoddy wooden wall if it suits your nation. Besides, I don't think it's that big of a deal since you're joining in rather late and the others have already established themselves. I wouldn't want you to start with drawbacks right off the bat! Also don't be so sure about your enemies not finding you here... ;)
