That was what they were. For the most part, people ignored them. Sometimes they rammed whaling ships, sometimes they blocked trucks, other times they marched and yelled... but they were ignored. They were just fools, people from a bygone era. For the most part, these were peaceful people... that is, until the Earth began to die. Then things really kicked off and turned crazy. The peaceful protests grew louder and louder. Some stayed peaceful, but as the conditions grew worse, some grew violent. They began to bomb fuel tankers, set fire to power plants, and slash the tires of gasoline trucks. A small group of these environmentalists and humanists, calling themselves the Gaian Defense Force, started calling for independence from what they saw as "a blind government suckling from the teat of the industry". Again, they were mostly ignored, save for a few SWAT raids and newspaper headlines. They were just some stupid cult. Finally, the GDF's chance came when the US government began to fall. A small group of cultists stormed a museum warship in Baton Rouge, and seized her, along with many rounds of ammunition. With around sixty of this rag-tag army, armed with hunting rifles and handguns, they set out for the Caribbean. When they landed on the shores of Cuba, they found a country that had been wiped from the map. Category Five hurricanes, spawned out of the poisoned, stinking air, had razed most of the country and led to the total collapse of all government operations. The few remaining survivors either fled or went along with the GDF's cult-like ideals, simply to be fed and sheltered. After a few weeks, more stolen ships came in, with more GDF recruits. People began to believe in the GDF, crazy and radical as they were. Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic... all were usurped by the GDF. The GDF turned these lands int Gaiafirma, a theocracy, run by the religion which worships Mother Nature and the idea of a connected ecosystem, with humans as a central part with huge responsibilities. High Chief Kirman was established as the supreme ruler of the land, and soon he called for a new plan. He turned his country's attention to the stars, and called for action. He called for a new home, a new Womb, where mankind could be born again from Mother Nature's belly and start afresh without the corruption that had poisoned "the Crib". Needless to say, Gaiafirma is a theocracy gripped by cultist fervor, and it is unlikely that they will let anyone get in the way. Many radical scientists and other intellectuals came over with the simple environmentalists, and have given Gaiafirma a head start in scientific understanding. As well, some of the ships hijacked were research vessels, so Gaiafirma can conduct research despite it's badly damaged architecture. However, the rain and wind from all of the hurricanes has left the topsoil eroded and mostly unable to bear plant life. Gaiafirma can grow crops on the decks of supertankers and bulk carriers, but, needless to say, this is not ideal. On top of that, whatever industrial architecture that existed has been blown away or is without power. For the most part, the High Chiefs, Rootgrowers, and Seedsowers have instilled enough fervor in the assimilated and imported populace. Some resistance still exists, however. This is being quashed, but it is taking time and money to do so.
