I still think Mako got it because it would make him "awesome" thankfully I haven't seen Korra do it but maybe I'm forgetting when she did. For Mako, he probably had to learn it when growing up on the streets, but even so, I kind of doubt him having time or space (let alone peace and quiet) to do it but at least he doesn't overuse it. Aw nooo Asami can't hurt Mako at least not badly, she'd be horrible for like all eternity because she's not big on fighting (despite being a fan of pro bending). I'm sure in the thick of the battle there will be injuries on both sides but I'd kind of hate to have some [i]big[/i] injury be involved, it just seems a little cliche in my head. *pouts*
