There's a difference between making jokes and having a meaningful dialogue, for example the first fight between Saber and Lancer in Fate/zero where both were trying to kill each other. But both had respect and understanding for each other, thus making the entire thing that much more enjoyable to watch. I actually originally thought Judgment was something akin to a knight with honor so the possibility didn't seem out of character for him. That was my initial thoughts anyway. Ironically he seems closer to Berserker in allot of ways.
