I don't think it's really weird or immature to fuel a rivalry. The older shinobi did it all the time. Kakashi and Gai's dad fueled their rivalry, but then again Gai's dad was pretty weird and immature. But yeah. As long as they feel like the rivalry is good natured then it's fine. Rivalries help them both get stronger.
