So, just to clarify, sort of like a special honour guard unit that gets deployed as need be on the battlefield in a mobile/responsive sense?

EDIT: in response to your lore ideas, I think succession crises allow all sorts of opportunities for chaos and back-handed deals, and would create plenty of hooks for the PCs to care more or less about the fate of some factions.
