Not just Dwarven, but yes, their metaphysics also come to play - he's just interested in how things [i]really[/i] work. 

As for the smoking, Morrowind had skooma pipes, that's what I'm basing the character's habit on. I personally like the concept of a guy carrying around a little hookah around and piping to relax and think.
