Raphaela is a rather tall woman, being one of the tallest female trainees. She has brown hair that reaches down to of her chest, which she ties in a low, loose ponytail on duty. Her eyes are a blank, grey, and quite narrow. She wears the standard Trainee Corps uniform, and on days off she wears a light brown cardigan with a white polo shirt underneath, along with a dark green skirt.

Raphaela is a very loud and talkative person, and is difficult to quieten down. She's extremely over-confident, despite her lack of skill in combat, and she's usually passed off as arrogant and self conceited. She can be sarcastic at times, and jokes around with her fellow trainees often.

Raphaela is shown to be playful and teasing towards her friends, and cares a great deal for them. She's a very determined and passionate person, wanting to regain humanity's freedom from the titans. She's headstrong and never resorts to giving up. Although her combat skills are relatively poor, Raphaela stays confident and strong when faced with tough situations.

When forming plans, Raphaela becomes sly and cunning, acting like some sort of evil tactician. She plans out carefully, and never rushes into battle without one.

On the inside, Raphaela feels very hollow, fragile and lonely, and only puts up a strong front because she doesn't want people to think of her as weak. She would often get into fights when she was younger, only to come home crying after. She says she wants to be remembered as 'that strong, confident soldier', rather than 'the girl who would always come home in tears'. Although she teases her friends a lot, she cares for them deeply, and is grateful for their company, seeing as she barely had any friends back at home.

Raphaela is a very strong minded person, and never gives up no matter what. She uses her smart tactics to overcome obstacles, and will take charge of any situation. She's passionate and determined, and when things go wrong, she'll try to pick everyone up again.

Skill wise, Raphaela is renown for her high intelligence, and can strategise with almost no effort.

Raphaela has a tendency to overestimate her abilities, whether it be her theoritcal or practical skills. Her arrogance often leads to conflict, which makes the other trainees, even her instructor question her leadership skills. Raphaela doesn't exactly know the 'limits' of others, so when she accidentally hits a nerve, she isn't fully aware of it.

Skill wise, despite her large frame, Raphaela is terrible when it comes to practical activites [Hand to hand combat especially], and her 3DMG skills aren't something to be praised. 
She's not very strong either, which annoys her.

Raphaela grew up in Trost and had a relatively normal childhood. She shared a very close bond with her single mother, and Raphaela saw her as her role model. Her mother would often tell her daughter stories about her father, and how he had herorically slain titans in the Survey Corps. This, at one point inspired Raphaela to actually join, which her mother quickly objected.

Noticing Raphaela's tendency to get into fights [which often resulted in Raphaela running home crying], her mother told her to stay strong and confident, and asked her to promise that she would, no matter what happened. She knew she wasn't going to live any longer than Raphaela's tenth birthday, and tried desperately to make her stronger before she died of her terminal illness.

After the death of her mother, Raphaela had a mental breakdown, completely shattered by her mother's death. Even after she was sent to live with her uncle, Raphaela had no one else to lean on for support, and closed herself off from almost everyone. She would often spend time alone, because her uncle was constantly out at work. Raphaela grew to hate herself for not being the strong and confident woman her mother wanted her to be, saying that she broke her promise towards her. 

A year later, Raphaela finally decided it was time to change. She didn't want to be seen as weak or fragile by others anymore, and saught respect from people. She wanted to fulfil her dreams and keep her mother's promise. She wanted to have friends and be around people more, instead of distancing herself from them. Thus, she decided to change herself for the better: take chances, speak to people, have a laugh or two, fulfil dreams and most importantly, stay strong and confident, just like her mother had said.

This change didn't come out as perfectly however. Raphaela became a little too over confident and arrogant, and her desire to become more talkative developed into her becoming a louder, motor-mouth type of person. When she tried to become 'stronger', her sarcastic nature began to show, and she would often insult bullies rather than fighting them head on. This, as usual, ended up pretty badly. At one point, she decided to join the military, remembering what she had wanted to do as a child. She thought becoming a Survey Corps soldier would make her more memorable and praisable, so she joined the Trainee Corps.
